Soca Jukebox 2017 "Missouri Lions" T-Shirt

2017 has been a great season for Soca Jukebox.  We have just a few commemorative, "Missouri Lions" T's left.  This original art work was done by cut-paper artist, Angie Pickman at Rural Pearl Designs.  We really love it with the prairie land grasses, the humming birds and if you look closely... you'll see the Lion!  Thanks for a perfect design emphasizing our down-home, mid-western, land-locked, Rasta-goodness, Angie!

Limited editions.  While Supplies Last.

What Do Toby Keith, Elvis & Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias Have in Common?

Welcome to the
July 2017 Newsletter
from Soca Jukebox.

Nebraska!  The Caribbean of the Midwest? - Who knew?  Well, we did.  Out of the 600 plus shows Soca Jukebox has performed in recent years, fully 575 of them have been in the great state of Nebraska.

We’ve even got our own state tax identity there that allows us to “shelter” our investments the way some other companies might go “off-shore” or nab one of those convenient swiss bank accounts.

Kind of like that Attorney/Client Privilege… We’ve got Nebraska and Nebraska has Soca Jukebox.  Deep in our hearts, minds and the very nuclei of our molecules.

In the last several weeks alone, we have performed for the Minden Street Dance, Hastings 4th of July and our very own garden of eden, Cunningham’s Journal in Kearney.   This week… The Buffalo County Fair!

Nebraska… if you ever decide to secede from the union… Soca Jukebox is coming with you.

Reggae Pop Quiz

Q:  What do Toby Keith, Elvis and Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias all have in common…?

A:   Soca Jukebox!

Other correct answers include… (conceal carry, love of fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches and boots planted firmly where the sun don’t shine if you cross ‘em.

Soca J is amongst a great line-up of great americans for the 2017 Buffalo County Fair!

We’ll play 2 shows tonight (thursday 7-27)  Private Patron’s Party, 530 & Public Concert at 730.

Wedded Bliss - It’s a proven fact that if Soca plays your wedding reception, your marriage is blessed with longevity and happiness.  9 years ago, we played for Ned and Burgandy’s big day.  Since they live in Illinois, they had to come all the way back to our show at Captain Ron’s, Lake Ozark MO to celebrate one more time with the wedding party and new friends.

It was awesome to catch up with them, to hear about the family and the new addition.

I got to say… they haven’t changed a bit.  I hope they’ll say the same!  Except… maybe that we were even BETTER than we were in 2008.

Looking for the longest relationship you’ve ever had?  Soca Jukebox might just be the magic you need.  Also… it helps to be a good person, etc.  Love IS patient, kind and all that.  But, mostly it’s Soca J.

Are you more like a Humming Bird or a Lion?

New Artwork - We are so excited about our new original art work from Angie Pickman at Rural Pearl (www.RuralPearl.com).  When the band needed something special for this season’s tour poster, Angie over-delivered.  It’s a perfect blend of pastoral, midwestern and reggae rock.  Can you see the lion in there?  We kind of think of ourselves as Missouri Lions anyway.  Sleeping all day in the sun and letting the women do all the work.  King of the beasts or Kings of the beat?  Thank you, Angie!  We love it.

It's My Party (and I'll jam with Soca Jukebox if I want to) - Soca J formed in the summer of 2002 with our very first show on Aug. 10.  That makes this year our 15th season as band mates, friends, internet breakers and rhythm makers.  We are celebrating all summer long.  Help us blow out the candles at a few shows this season and our wish will have come true!

For Just $500 Down... - We’ve got a new live album coming soon!  You know what they say about the “good things” and the “waiting”?  Well… we are waiting.  We’ll be sharing the track list and letting a little bit leak as things continue to come together.  It’s getting close.  So close.  Stay tuned for pre-sale and special packages available only to those on this select list.  We are VERY selective.

Breaking the Internet http://www.socajukebox.com is open for business.  Complete with up-to-the-minute calendar for 2017!  We forked over the big bucks (and Ben’s first born) to the folks at Marks Media for the world’s greatest demonstration videos and the spectacularly updated dotcom.  It took some serious patience and cajoling to make it happen.  9 months to be exact.  We could have actually learned how to code, built our own computers and gestated a human baby in that time.  “Congratulations, Soca J!  It’s a website.  Clay, it’s got your eyes.”

So stop by the online nursery for a “koochie koo”.  They are cute when their are little and websites don’t blow spit bubbles.

"Well..., you see... there's this band playing..., and I was... kinda wondering..., would you go out with me?

Supporter/Fan of the month -
Becky Boerkircher, Executive Director, St. Joseph Downtown Partnership

Soca kicked of the “Sounds of Summer” concert series this season for our hometown, downtown association.  It was hot, hot, hot but the music and the crowd were all of the highest caliber.  Executive Director of the Downtown Partnership recently “testified” as to the power of our band to transport and elevate an audience.  Thank you, Becky!

"Soca Jukebox is like experiencing an island vacation.  Even though you are in Missouri, the sounds of the band make you feel like you are somewhere special.  That's what makes them a crowd favorite!  From a professional aspect...they are just a great group of guys to work with!”

-St. Joseph Downtown Partnership, Rhabecca Boerkircher, Executive Director

This Guy!

If you've got a band... he's about to put you all over YouTube.  His artistic approach is what I would describe as "crotch-view".  He will go to any extreme to capture the moment.  He truly took us to places we had never been.  We laughed, we cried.  We don't want to go back.

Getting to Know Soca Jukebox's,
Clay Johnston.

CLAY JOHNSTON: LEAD VOCAL / DOUBLE SECONDS / PERCUSSION

Imagine, if you will, a curly, ginger-haired 8-year old boy skirting the edges of the stages of dance halls and honky tonks throughout the wilds of north Missouri. His dad hands him the mic, and he throws down some Oak Ridge Boys and The Auctioneer Song, basks in the glow of the hot lights, then returns to his all-night Dr. Pepper bender. Everyone has to start somewhere, and that’s where Clay got bit by the rockstar bug.

Perhaps he’s best described as some sort of modern-day superhero; living by day as his alter-ego business professor, small business owner, and mild-mannered family man. Then, when he hears a cry for rock, he always seems to disappear, and in his place swoops in the colorful character we’ve all grown to know. With the super-human powers of social awkwardness, toasting, Spanglish, and tenor crooning, he’ll save the day and send evildoers packing with a devastating booty shaking.

Whether you need to sign up for a marketing class at Benedictine College, brew your own beer at Brew Lab (www.brewlabkc.com), or just want to laugh, sigh and cringe at some of the world’s most adorable, talented, and energetic kids, Clay will be there. He may not be the hero you need, or the one you deserve, but he’s the one you’ve got.

Other success…

“Brew Lab” KC is OPEN for Biz-nass!  Soca’s Pavarotti, CJ and his entrepreneurial compratriates recently opened their newly-expanded home-brewing adventure in Overland Park, KS.  Lots of fine brews on tap as well as chef-designed, signature small plates all served by an excellent staff.

Clay also holds the record for the most MVP seasons, recipient of three “Golden Jukebox” awards, Favorite Professor at Benedictine College and has fathered more children than any other band member.

Way to go, CJ!

I Listened to Great Music for 40 Years and Here's What Happened

image002.jpg

Welcome to the
June 2017 Newsletter
from Soca Jukebox.

It's just a fact that a person's favorite music is the music of their youth.  The songs that remind us of being a certain place, at a certain time.  Great music can transport us and bring those good feelings right back to us.  It's truly time-traveling.

We want to go along for the ride with our friends, family and our audiences on that journey again and again.  That's why we play such a wide variety of music (like 5 decades worth).  We want to play something everyone can enjoy.  It's great to see so many generations at our shows all having a wonderful time together, sharing THEIR music and making new memories.

We aim to keep it fresh for you too.  Taking familiar favorites and giving them a little Latin twist or a Reggae spin.

Thank you for sharing your music with us.  Let's make some great memories this summer.

Festivals of Friendship

Kind of perfect for us.  The Lathrop Friendship Festival has been running for over 50 years.  We have been so fortunate to be invited again, again, again and again!  This little Missouri town really knows about what’s good in life, what’s really important… getting Soca Jukebox back.  Juuuuust kidding.

It’s an amazing event with so much great support from the whole community.  We’ve built some quality friendships there over the years too.  This year was an 80’s theme complete with a Michael Jackson Tribute.  That didn’t stop them from including us.  Maybe they think we are getting close to 80 ourselves.  Thank you, Lathrop!  Hope to see you soon.

This Week…

We’ll be dancin’ in the streets in Minden NE!  This is our first time to play in Minden (and we hope not our last).  The good people there have worked for over a year to bring us in for this very special, annual community event.  We’ll hit the famous “Pioneer Village”, do a little light blacksmithing, grind some corn and unload the reggae rock on one of Nebraska’s finest small towns at 8pm.

Home Runs For Rose...

We were very proud to participate last weekend in the 2nd annual, “Home Runs for Rose”, a charity event to fight childhood cancer.  For the most part, it was a warm but beautiful day with families meeting for a charity softball tournament and live music.

We played alongside regional favorites, Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders, The Nace Brothers as well as national recording artists, Pure Prairie League.  Ben even let them use his bass amp and all agreed it was the best they’d ever had the pleasure to plug into.

While we made it through our set, an impending thunderstorm forced us to cover the stage, batten down the hatches and take cover for about an hour.  The storm passed and the show went on!

The event was a great success and raised over $15,000 that was awarded to a local family fighting for and alongside their young son, Gaige.

It’s amazing the good work that good people, a little music (and some softball) can accomplish.

Roger gave us a great testimonial recently.  It’s been our honor to close the Imagine Eleven Concert Series for several years now.  This special family-friendly and free Sunday night series in sponsored by a group of our local churches.  They offer a wide variety of music at no cost to music fans all summer long.  Soca will close this year’s season on August 13 along with special guest, Shawn Minter (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/life-again/id1238480952) (www.Shawnmintermusic.com).

"When the Imagine Eleven needed the right ending to its summer music series that uses music to encourage the community to support and care for one another, Soca Jukebox is the only one we trust. There excellence in musical entertainment combined with the ability to lift the human spirit is a rare gift that they are able to deliver each year. David (aka Dave) Jarman.

David Jarman (Dave) has been playing drums for over 25 years and is well respected in the local music community as a business owner, teacher and session drummer, as well as for his ability to rock out with the best of them. As soon as Dave sits down at the drums and picks up his sticks, his versatility and talent are evident; his passion for music is unmistakable. Drumming became an important part of Dave’s life at an early age and has been a constant ever since. He has performed as a freelance drummer with countless ensembles and has tracked drums on many albums. In his spare time, Dave enjoys building custom drum sets (Jarman Drums), woodworking, and mountain biking.

Our famously handsome frontman, lead singer, steel pan virtuoso, conga caresser and chief guirro scratcher, Clay Johnston is also a moonlighting college professor and entrepreneur.  As a founding partner in the home brewing business “Brew Lab” KC, he and his team are growing into a larger location in Overland Park, KS.  Besides being able to have a great time with your friends concocting your very own signature brews there, you’ll be able to get some sweet eats and sample some of the other specialty libations on tap!

27 Ways to Feel Great All Summer Long

Welcome to the
May 2017 Newsletter
from Soca Jukebox.

If you are getting this you are part of very select team of incredibly beautiful or extremely handsome music fans with a penchant for fun tunes and wild drumming.

Thank you for that.  You are the kind of person we want on our side!

The Ultimate Guide to Summer Fun

Teachers everywhere are just about to let those "fools" out.  We fools, right here, have already kicked off our Summer 2017 Concert Season.  On Cinco de Mayo, Soca performed for the Children's Advocacy Center and their annual Apple Blossom BBQ contest.

It was a beautiful night to bang bongos on the backside of our hometown city hall.

TONIGHT... In just a few hours, we'll be taking the stage for the inaugural "Parties on the Parkway", 5pm, SW parkway and King Hill in St. Joseph.  The weather will be cool (and dry, we insist!) but the music will be hot.  All of your friends will be there so you should really come down.

If you haven't seen the all-new SocaJukebox.Com go there immediately.  You can pretty much do everything you can imagine there besides physically hug us.  Up to date calendar, all the music and great new videos.

It's never been easier to share Soca Jukebox with a friend.  Be a friend, won't you?

What makes Soca J unstoppable?

We think we've got a pretty great thing going here.  Fun, familiar music, remarkable instrumentation and genuine friendship for days.  Make that years.  Make that 15 years to be exact.

2017 is our 15th season as a jolly band of misfits traveling the country, building relationships, making great memories and sharing our music.

To celebrate, we've got a new album coming in June!  We should have the master tracks back in just a couple of weeks along with some great new art work.

It's getting exciting around here!  To think... we could legally get our driver's permit.

Rory Kelly, Owner - Cell Only

Rory gave us a great testimonial recently.  We loved working with him because his people know how to have a great time.  And he knows who to call when you are looking for just the right band to entertain high-level, party people.

“Soca Jukebox was hired to play a private event for a large group in Sioux Falls SD last summer.  We have had a musical act every year for the last 10 years at this event with little fan fare.  However, everyone loved Soca…people danced, sang along, and had a great time at the party with this group!  I chaired the event and still have people tell me it was the best event in the last 10 years mostly because of the evening played by Soca Jukebox.  On top of delivering on their performance the group was super easy to work with, punctual, and delivered on every promise made….which isn’t always the case in my experience.  I would recommend them to anyone or any function as they really bring the fun to the party!  I can’t wait to see them again!

Best night ever!”

Band Feature -
Getting to Know Soca Jukebox's Ben Leimkuhler.

Ben is the bassist, conservative watch-dog and accountant for Soca J. He performs many other honorary duties for the band and is licensed to hunt cougar in 9 states. He holds the U.S. digital speed record for 2 fingers on his right hand and has been nominated and awarded the “Golden Jukebox” 5 years running.

What to say about Ben…..Ben is a peculiar fellow, though quite brilliant actually. He has the ability to sit in a chair all day and think of a million great things to do, without actually doing them! Ben has lived a life that… Well he has managed to live a life that…. Well he’s alive. Just the other day, a long time ago, somebody was actually overheard saying something about how Ben isn’t as awful as one might think. In fact, he is even regarded in some circles as the King of the Spreadsheets. As Ben’s mad Excel skillzz tend to isolate him, he is always reluctant to reveal the true nature of his superpower. And so, he is a puzzle to the ordinary run of man. Yet, women are drawn to him because his powers are so fascinating. But Lo, there is no woman who can hold him! For always is he confronted with data of various types and values, and he must organize them into rows and columns. Will Ben ever find love?!? Experts believe it is highly doubtful. Outside of his commemorative spoon collection, Ben finds meaning and purpose while laying down crunchy bass grooves in the band he owns, Soca Jukebox.

The boys of Soca Jukebox are culinary connoisseurs.  They try a little bit of everything and look for great food options on the road.  Here they are pre-Indian/Nepalese lunch.  The spices did make some sweat profusely.  But in a very good way.

JAYPAN (JAY ALBRIGHT): LEAD PAN, PERCUSSION, BACKING VOX

JayPan is the confirmed and pre-qualified Hype Man for Soca J.

Beyond that, he’s a multi-instrumentalist and backing vocalist specializing in Lead Pan, timbales, “more cowbell”, woodblocks and sundry percussion.

He was Soca’s MVP in the 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2015 and is a shoe-in this season. Jay is a considerate professional, consummate performer, dedicated family man and a true friend.

“I’m (JayPan) the man, with the plan to do what he can, to jam you understand:) Life just can’t get much better for this rasta rocker that enjoys spending his days in the hallowed halls of the middle school environment and my evenings performing on the worlds best designed cereal bowl…steel drum that is. I dream of one day sitting on a beach with my steel drum full of Fruit Loops. Music has never been so yummy!!!”

Getting to Know Soca Jukebox

Island Rock extroverts, Soca Jukebox is one of the genre’s premier show bands. This five-piece ensemble features a battery of shimmering steel pans, an array of Latin percussion, a fastidious rhythm section and incendiary guitar work. Soca Jukebox is a cast of trained professional musicians that are multi-instrumentalists and engaging performers dedicated to “bringing the party”.

A live Soca engagement showcases five decades of well-known repertoire from diverse musical genres, reinvigorated by fresh, stylized arrangements and a high-energy percussion showdown. Their great song selection, top-shelf vocal talent with smooth harmony and tribal chanting offer sanctuary in an all-out Drum War. Soca Jukebox is interactive, crowd-pleasing and has a wide appeal to all ages and musical tastes. Their unique blend of Trop-Rock advances the category through classic hits in Rock, Reggae, Calypso and Soca (“SO-ul CAlypso”) infused with charisma, humor, false bravado and Rasta-goodness.

While Soca Jukebox is now in their 15th season, the core of the band has been performing together since their college days. Formal studies included master classes with Trinidadian steel pan inventor/pioneer, Elle Mannette as well as numerous Caribbean and Latin percussion specialists. Devoted to the cultural legacy, but with an ear on innovation, Soca’s talented players carry the music forward to uplift, entertain and share.

Soca Jukebox is always “In Season”, transporting land-locked expatriates and those in need of a “3 hour tour” on a year-round musical getaway. From their Kansas City, MO home base, the ensemble is nationally touring to festivals, college campuses, casinos, clubs, corporate and private events or a venue near you! The band has accepted invitations to divert and delight disparate factions from heads of state to “Parrotheads”.
